Classroom Management

Classroom management is imperative for a successful classroom environment, including clear and concise rules. The philosophy is as follows “To enlighten the student understanding of English in a fun and engaging classroom; an environment free of judgement and stress to induce excitement surrounding learning”. To make the philosophy possible the classroom will have clearly written and followed rules such as: treating all peers as equals; questions encouraged; and engagement from all students required to initiate community learning; there will be no judgment of any students in this classroom. Creating a judgment-free classroom will be essential for both students and teachers alike. The teacher will excite the students by enjoying the subject which they teach showing the students how fun learning can be. Creating assignments that challenge the students using many forms of teaching from group assignments, in-class activities, and individual reading and writing assignments.

Having an effective learning environment starts with having effective classroom management. Creating a routine that students can rely on is a great way to help students adapt. As students enter the classroom, they know just what to expect from the time they enter until they leave each day. Also having visible and clear classroom rules that must be followed with a zero-tolerance expectation. Having a clear expectation of respect for the teacher will assist with student discipline and behavior. The teacher is in charge, not the classroom or the students, and the standard is set on day one. Class size has a large effect on student learning and engagement, larger class sizes allow shy students to get lost in the “crowd”. A classroom should be of manageable size for the teacher to keep control of student activity and enable full student engagement and interaction. The environment of the classroom is also important when considering student learning. Creating a calming and inviting environment allows students to settle into the classroom, feel less stress, and induce feelings of happiness. Things such as the organization of desks, pictures on the walls, and even how the teacher teaches are all part of the learner-centered classrooms. Having desks organized where students can see one another more easily and the teacher can see all the students promote more interaction. Also, the flow of the classroom allows the teacher to move around the classroom freely and allows the teacher to interact with their students during lectures.

The classroom philosophy is for students to enjoy learning and feel free and encouraged to do so. While fun is important it is also vital for the students to understand who is in charge. Having clear rules as well as a clear hierarchy will enable students to understand respect for their peers and teachers alike. Using classroom environment to encourage students to have fun through color, design, and flow. Finally, also using technology to encourage creativity from both teachers and students. Technology allows the teacher to get creative and teach using platforms their students are more familiar with while also allowing the teacher to encourage risk-taking through assignments and student involvement. Having clear classroom management will help to ensure a teacher a successful teaching year!
